Transitions

One of the key goals of the Orion program is an education that is more than academic. We do this by introducing the skills and critical thinking needed to succeed academically, but also in life after Orion.

Starting in grade nine we begin the conversation about what happens after high school. In grade 10 students participate in a curriculum dedicated to transition and life skills that include managing social media, understanding and advocating for yourself, developing skills to succeed in college and independent living, and more.

Grades 11 and 12 focus on college and job goals and include our trademarked Orion Internship Program. This program is a key component to our individualized approach to developing real life skill experiences and learning. Students work for the month of June, mentored and supported in a real career setting, chosen to meet their career goals. This experience is one that students and families report has made a huge difference in their sense of personal accomplishment and trust in their future.

Social Skills

Social learning is integrated into every aspect of the Orion curriculum to allow for immediate social feedback. A dedicated social skills course covers peer relationships, collaboration, time management, empathy development and more. Our unique program helps students learn appropriate social skills and pragmatic language use in an authentic and purposeful manner.

Students are taught to make the connection between personal choices and good health, encouraging them to start using the concepts they learn. Students also begin to explore skills and responsibilities inherent in life after high school, including time management, college and career planning, and budgeting and household management.

In grade 12, students learn how to prepare for life after graduating from Orion. Faculty members mentor students as they develop long-term goals. Students learn skills that will help them apply for college, obtain accommodations in college, live independently, apply for jobs, and maintain personal and professional relationships.

Through Orion’s focus on transitions and social skills, your student will grow as a member of a community and develop a foundation for the future they will not get anywhere else.
