Orion Summer Program 2012
This year’s summer programming is all about Orion students. We have put together a collection of offerings that are designed specifically for current Orion students. In fact, we are limiting participation this year exclusively to Orion students. Choose from long weekend trips or camps that span the month of June. We believe there is something here for every Orion student.

Fee: $2000 ($2100 after March 15)
Instructor: Dr. Crampton
This summer program is designed to be an extension of the year-long social skills class, and recent research suggests Orion’s social skills program is effective in expanding the social potential of its students. In this program, students will discuss, learn about, and practice skills in developing their social prowess. Curriculum will also include a strong focus on anxiety management strategies. Students will take at least two day-long trips to destinations in the Bay Area. The focus of this offering is on continuing to work on social and anxiety management skills in a fun and enjoyable environment.

These second two weeks will continue where the Intermediate class left off, but with a focus on team-building and more outdoor activities. Students will have outings to a ropes course and kayaking. This program will also include at least two overnights. One overnight will be part of the kayaking adventure on the Russian River. Students completing the 8th and 9th grade this year are encouraged to also attend the Intermediate camp as a prerequisite for this camp.
On the Road
Instructor: Ms. Lamb
The summer is a great time to travel, especially without Mom and Dad. This year we are offering two long-weekend trips, which will be a good choice for students who would like to travel with the friends, but start out on a shorter, more manageable trips.
The Arts in Austin, Texas

In the last decade, the arts scene has exploded in Austin. Students will fly to Austin for the weekend and take in a museum, Zilker Park swimming hole, and a botanical tour. Students will also see a night ballet in the park. In addition to programming costs, fees cover roundtrip airfare and two nights in a hotel. There will be a possible side-trip to the campus of University of Texas at Austin or Texas A&M with sufficient interest.
Exploring Santa Barbara
June 14-17
Fee: $800
Students will travel by train to Santa Barbara, where they will get a feel for the central coast seaside town through exploring museums, attending an outdoor concert, and eating in local restaurants. In addition to programming costs, fees will cover a round-trip train ticket (Thursday will be an overnight train) and two nights in a hotel, along with some attractions. There will be a possible side-trip to see the campus of UC Santa Barbara if there is time and interest.
Experiencing Food
Instructor: Ms. Ng
June 4-8, 9am-3pm
Fee: $800 ($900 after March 15)
Orion staff has designed a program that helps students explore their relationship with food. Students will spend two days working at a community-based organic garden picking food and tending plants. Following this, students will spend two days working in a community-based food program. Students will then participate in a guided, team-based and creative response to their experience on the 5th day. Discussions with the instructor will focus on the origin and destination of food, economic disparity in food choices, nutrition, and an individual’s responsibility to his or her community. This offering gives students an opportunity to be productive in their community, examine their relationship with food, and build relationships and social skills.
